FortiGate Firewall Configuration Backup and Restore procedure in Firmware version 4.x

Following steps need to be taken for FortiGate firewall backup.

  • Connect the firewall through web browser.

  • Login to the firewall (Enter User name & Password).



Step 1 & 2: After logging into the Firewall, Click System –>Dashboard –> Dashboard on the left hand side of the window


Step 3 : Right side pane of the window, under System Information –> System Configuration –> Click on Backup 




Backup window will appear : Encryption is an optional, You can encrypt the configuration file with password protection or you can backup normally.

To Backup Normally. Do Not check Encrypt configuration file.

To Encrypt : Enter a password to encrypt the configuration file. You will need this password while restoring the configuration file. Confirm Enter the password again to confirm the password. Click on Backup tab.


Restore the configuration file : This process is similar to backup procedure, but instead of choosing backup choose Restore button which is beside to Backup Option ( Step 4 )

Select Local PC  and click Choose File and Browse for the backup file and Select.
